Shaping Up to be a Special Season for MT Track

Middle Tennessee enjoyed a successful day at the KMS Invite, as the Blue Raiders grabbed eight first-place finishes.

Six of the eight event winners came from the women’s side. Janet Amponsah led the day with a 23.93 time in the 200 meter. Amponsah followed that performance with a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.52.

Agnes Abu also registered a first-place victory in the women’s mile run, clocking a time of 5:00.23. Julia Jelagat led the way in the 3000-meter run, finishing first at 10:29.89, while Sharon Kibiwott and Rachel Kigen also landed top-five performances in the event.

MT’s women’s relay teams also shined Sunday afternoon. The 4×400-meter relay team of Amponsah, Taylor Day, Loveth Odia and Shaina Johnson took first with a time of 3:44.40; while the distance medley relay team comprised of Abike Egbeniyi, Odia, Johnson and Abu finished first with a 11:54.77 mark.

In the field, Qetuwrah Abdullah-Muhammad took first in the women’s long jump with a leap of 5.75 meters.

For the men, Solomon Afful shined with a first-place win in the 200-meter, clocking in at 21.03. Afful also set a personal-best while taking second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.76.

Hillary Rono led a 1, 2, 3 charge in the men’s mile run with a 4:12.04 mark. Geoffry Cheruiyot and Jacob Choge finished second and third, respectively.

The Blue Raiders return to action this weekend as they are set to host their annual invitational. Field events are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the running events capping the day at 2 p.m.
